THE DESIGNER & FOUNDER

Gertrud Blomstrand, Physiotherapist & Industrial Designer

As a physiotherapist, I help treat people who are in pain on a daily basis. Some of my patients are pregnant women suffering from pelvic girdle pain.

As a mother of three children myself, I know just how much strain pregnancy can put on a woman’s body, and while women’s bodies are designed to carry babies, the child-bearing experience can be very different from mother to mother. Some women suffer from excessive movement of the pubic joint (SPD) or pelvic girdle pain, for example.

Nobody knows exactly why this happens, but there’s no need to suffer! Help is available. Personally, I came to take a special interest in meeting the needs of expectant mothers after many years working as a physiotherapist. The result was Active Mama, an effective solution to SPD and pelvic girdle pain for modern women.

BACKGROUND

Meeting my patients’ needs

I had just completed my education as an industrial designer after having worked as a physiotherapist for 21 years. Little did I realise that combining my two professions would prove to be very useful! How?

The patients at our clinic told me they were dissatisfied with the support belts on the market; they had trouble finding a belt that fit properly, they often felt even less well when wearing them and the belts often failed to give the pain relief and support they wanted.

That’s when I came up with the idea of designing a pelvic support belt that pregnant women would really enjoy using!

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Active during pregnancy

The belt needed to:

  • fit well
  • support both the lower back and pelvis
  • be attractive, easy to use and strong and
  • not be too visible under clothing.

Most women wanted to wear it in between their underwear and their clothes. Like a belt and underwear combined, in some ways. The result was Active Mama.

With the birth of Active Mama, expectant mothers could finally get effective pain relief! I added the TENS pain-relief device as an optional accessory for even greater comfort. At last, pregnant women could live active lives again!

Active Mama let women go back to exercising and return to work from sick leave. Put simply, it improved their quality of life.
